Ryan Leonard, clarinet


Ryan Leonard was born in Pasadena, CA and was raised in Westfield, NJ. He began his musical studies at 8 years old at the New Jersey Workshop for the Arts. He attended the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division before earning his BFA and MM at Carnegie Mellon University as a student of Thomas Thompson and Michael Rusinek.

A versatile performer, Ryan has premiered works by Mark Fromm (Sonata Deux Ex Machina for bass clarinet and piano), Andrew Griffin (Atlantic Concerto for bass clarinet), and Nathan Hall(On the Troposphere). He has performed with numerous ensembles and orchestras such as the Pittsburgh Symphony, Erie Philharmonic, Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, Westmoreland Symphony, Microscopic Opera, Quantum Theatre (Golijov’s Ainadamar), Ovrearts, Alia Musica and Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh. Ryan spent three consecutive summers at the Pierre Monteux School in Hancock, ME with his wife, clarinetist Kira Bokalders. Ryan’s other teachers and mentors include Andrew Lamy, Miriam Lockhart and Richard Page. He enjoys biking, reading and cooking when not performing or teaching.
